An awesome lady wearing a sexy outfit which hides her true identity - known as the “Redbud Woman”, has been handing out clothes, food and even money to those less fortunate on the streets of Beijing. She mentioned on her blog that she was “nervous” as it was her first day as the Redbud Woman, so she is probably not the same lady who donned the same outfit to hand out supplies in Hong Kong around May.

This is quite reminiscent of the Secret Santa who passed out $100 bills at locations where poorer people could be found. I think I remember him saying in a video I watched a while ago (they purposely didn’t film his face) something along the lines of “It’s okay to copy me - anybody can be Secret Santa. Not just financially, but acts of kindness too.” It’s just an identity - an idea, and it’s not about the giver, or getting any reward, but just about the act of giving.

The Way We Are (2008) Ann Hui

Rating:

I had the pleasure of watching this gem of a movie this weekend. In the simplest way it had the ability to encapsulate the life of the average working class in Hong Kong beautifully. Family is family, no matter what. The family you’re born with, but also the family you find along the way. Director Ann Hui has managed to convey the sort of compassion in Chinese culture which is very hard to describe - in fact, there are many moments where there is no dialogue because silence speaks best. Sometimes there are just no words. I hope that Hong Kong cinema will continue to move forward in this positive direction. A film with substance, thought-provoking for the audience. That’s something worth watching.

A little more detail on submissions

As you’ve probably guessed from our zine’s name, we are not limited to a particular subject. What we can do if explore any issue in greater detail.

You can submit anything that is original content created by you. This means drawings, illustrations, stories, essays/articles, letters, ideas for projects or other ideas for collaborations.

Be inspired, and create :)

Our movie flowchart inspired by Karen Kravett’s So You Want To Watch YouTube flowchart (which was inspired by So You Need A Typeface!)
We tried to avoid including too many popular films that we assumed the average reader will have already seen, but there are some classics just in case! Thanks to Gillie for putting it all together!
